Staff Accountant Job Description

Reporting directly to the VP Finance, this person is responsible for all aspects of the accounting cycle. This person will be involved in day-to-day operations, ensuring obligations & deadlines are met. Responsible for grant applications and compliance with grants.

In the capacity of General Accountant

  • Assistance in the preparation of monthly financial statements and variance analysis
  • Monthly reconciliations of bank statements, credit cards and expense reports
  • Preparation of adjusting entries
  • Perform month end closings
  • Preparation for the year-end audit
  • Maintain internal financial controls and procedures
  • Prepare quarterly GST/QST reports
  • Prepare monthly bank reports and EDC insurance reports

In the Capacity of Accounts Payable & Accounts Receivable

  • Enter customer and supplier invoices
  • Review A/R and A/P on a regular basis, follow-up on any overdue accounts
  • Ensure that all new customer accounts are insured with EDC
  • Ascertain the completeness of the Accounts Payable & Accounts Receivables listings
  • Prepare weekly wire payments and cheque runs

Other responsibilities

  • Manage cash flow
  • Manage inventory
  • Manage foreign exchange swaps
  • Administration of payroll and group insurance
  • Preparation of tax filings , ensuring compliance with payment, reporting and other tax requirements
  • Prepare Royalty reports, schedules and payments
  • Coordinate government grants, applications and marketing claims
  • Responsible for matters relating to Human Resources (maintaining employee files, vacation schedules, termination procedures, compensation, legal compliance, group insurance participation)
  • Participate in special projects, prepare ad-hoc reports and perform other tasks relating to his/her area of expertise

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles and practices
  • Experience in General Accounting (full cycle)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of QuickBooks a plus
  • Fluently Bilingual
